Happy heavenly birthday to Johnnie Ray. On a stage, he was like a punk rocker in a lounge singer's body. His vocal style crossed Billie Holiday-jazz-vocalese with blues and pop standards, foreshadowing rock'n'roll and modern r'n'b. He was practically deaf, and some say that prompted his loud vocal delivery, as he threw his entire body into the notes with over-the-top emotion. Born in Oregon, he was a singer-songwriter and pianist who developed his animated style in small African American nightclubs in Detroit. That’s where he was discovered in 1949 and signed to Okeh Records (the R&B subsidiary of Columbia). His star rose fast, netting him roles in feature films, and Tony Bennett called Ray “the father of rock’n’roll” as he generated teen hysteria well before Elvis Presley. Today Ray is cited as an influence on artists ranging from Leonard Cohen to Morrissey.
Ray had several hits in his early career (he wrote “The Little White Cloud That Cried”), but “Cry” became his signature work, becoming an international chartbuster when it debuted in 1951. In Ray’s original vocal-heavy arrangement with The Four Lads, the arching chord progression is relatively straightforward, suitable for country, jazz, or pop renditions. The progression repeats two times (no bridge) and builds to a passionate outburst, taking us from a broken heart to a bittersweet climax. Letting the tears flow leads us to a healing revelation, to finding “the light behind the cloudy skies.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDOvIR3Kn_8 Produced by Mitch Miller, Ray’s single lodged in the US charts for three months. “Cry” has been remade countless times and it was a repeat hit with Ronnie Dove (1966), Lynn Anderson (1972), and Crystal Gayle (1986), but no one has taken ownership from Ray’s heart-wrenching delivery of “Cry.”
His 1952 JOHNNIE RAY debut LP on Columbia Records stayed in the charts for four months. It featured the single “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home” as well as sturdy covers of “cowboy songs.” After a string of sell-out concerts and hit TV appearances, he turned in an admirable acting role in the major motion picture THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS with Ethel Mermen and Marilyn Monroe. However, due to a variety of factors, Ray’s star faded in America and he was dropped by Columbia in 1960. Fortunately, he continued to draw audiences in Australia, England, and in Europe. Then his American career rebounded in the 1980s. In this clip, you can hear he still had the power, singing “Cry” in the same key of C he did as a younger man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AYZ0Omz1h4 He passed away in 1990 (age 63).
For many years I worked with Davy Jones (of The Monkees), and Davy he was a big fan of Ray. Davy met Ray in the 1970s, saying, “It was when Ray was in a career slump, playing with a pick-up band in a dingey Manhattan nightclub. The band kept trying to put funk into the songs, but it wasn’t working. It was kind of sad, but at least I got to meet him.”
Davy wanted to produce a musical about Ray, and in 2008 Davy and I sat and studied stacks of Johnnie Ray videos and took notes. We also interviewed first-wave fans of Ray who’d seen him in the 1950s and got his autograph. In an obvious move, Davy remade “Cry” for his 2009 SHE album, and his “Cry” cover is the star of the album—a recording with that mystique that comes when lyrical intent, sounds, and raw feelings push into a timeless realm. The stunning orchestrations by Chris Andrews and Skip Kline blend perfectly with Davy's powerful vocal--arguably one of the strongest in his career. 12 years later I revisited the track to make this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc-wUPJ1LX4 Suddenly, waves of emotion came over me, then I cried for 2 days. Then I felt better, just like the song promised.
In 2023 I added “Cry” to the set list I perform in assisted living homes (demographically it folds right in). In a nearly Pavlovian response, I cry when I perform it. Perhaps it’s the waves of emotional and spiritual invested in “Cry,” washing through me and reminding me of the lives who’ve been reached by one little song. HB JR, and thank you for your voice and expression.

"More than 130 people, including Gloria Steinem, and organizations in the field of women’s rights advocacy and domestic violence and sexual assault awareness have signed an open letter to support Amber Heard, who lost a defamation suit this year brought by her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, for an op-ed in which she said she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
The letter, which was exclusively shared with NBC News ahead of its public release Wednesday, was signed by groups like the National Organization for Women, the National Women’s Law Center, Equality Now and the Women’s March Foundation. It was written by a group of people who identify as domestic violence survivors and supporters of Heard."

Universal's Dark Universe is dead! Long live Universal's Dark Universe!
2017 after seeing the success of shared universes of Marvel and the not-as-successful-but-giving-it-the-old-college-try effort of Warner Bros. / DC Comic's extended universe, Universal Studios announced their shared universe : The Dark Universe. The films - kicking off with the Tom Cruise fronted THE MUMMY - were to reboot the classic characters in a film series that would be more THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN than THE AVENGERS.
But after the failure of 2017's THE MUMMY (and the failure of the scouting party film that was Luke Evans' DRACULA UNTOLD), Universal gave up on the concept resulting in the scuttling of Javier Bardem's turn as Frankenstein's monster, reportedly Angelina Jolie as The Bride of Frankenstein, and Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man.
But Universal isn't content with just being seen as the distributor of Blumhouse films or the owners of an "amusement park" (although I have never once been amused at Universal Studios) or the studio that brought you CATS. They went back to the drawing board. Not content to let over 100 years of Intellectual Property idle, Universal has decide to make their monster films a'la carte. The appetizer? Leigh Whannell's take on the H.G. Wells novel / 1933 Universal film THE INVISIBLE MAN.
There's no over-the-top science mumbo-jumbo, no person swathed in medical bandages while rocking shades. This take is more grounded (yes, even though there is an invisible person. Yes, even though Aldis Hodge plays a cop who can afford a gorgeous home in San Francisco.) and is a psychological thriller in the vein of neo-classics "Sleeping with the Enemy" and "Enough".
Playing a woman in peril but also a woman of fortitude isn't new for Elisabeth Moss, she of THE HANDMAID'S TALE and just as she has shown in that series, Moss is a tornado of talent.
The Cast and Creatives: Michael Dorman, writer-director Leigh Whannell, Aldis Hodge, producer Jason Blum, Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Storm Reid.
- Since the film was shot in Australia (because who doesn't love tax credits?) Whannell was able to cast his friend in a small, yet pivotal role - the friend? Actor/writer/director and stuntman Nash Edgerton.
Nash is the one who looks like Keanu Reeves' stand-in.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen isn't new to monsters and things that go bump in the night. He was a costar in NBC's DRACULA starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and he was one of the stars of Netflix's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.
and he is back for the just wrapped THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR.
And because he's British, and tall and arguably good looking there are people who want him to step into James Bond's tux (he can do fashion - he is the son of designers). But what says Oliver?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Johnnie Ray, the vibrant vocalist whose blues-jazz animations foreshadowed rock’n’roll and “blue eyed soul.” A childhood archery accident made him deaf in one ear—which some say was the reason he sang so forcefully (an imprint for me as a “Singer at Large”). He started as a teen radio singer in Portland OR before he moved to Detroit, building a following in small, mostly African-American nightclubs—which fed his penchant for blues, gospel, jazz, and R&B. In 1951 he was signed to Okeh Records. His star rose quickly with hit songs, “teen idol” status, and an appearance in the 1954 film “There’s No Business Like Show Business” with Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe. Ray’s “Walkin’ in the Rain” and “Little White Cloud That Cried” (which he wrote) are still playlisted. He is credited for blazing a trail for Elvis Presley, and Ray’s dramatic stage presence and melancholic style is a template for Leonard Cohen and Morrissey.
By 1960 Ray’s star had faded in the US. His fan base sustained him in Australia and England, but for decades he repeatedly attempted to reclaim a spot in the American pop mainstream (he died in 1990). It was during one of those comeback attempts (70s) that Davy Jones told me he saw Ray perform at a grimy little club in Manhattan, backed by a pick-up band that wasn’t simpatico with Ray’s material.
One day (circa 2008) Davy and I were in a hotel room in Florida, studying a stack of videos with Ray’s performances as Davy explained his fascination with Ray's quirky persona and his choices as “a self-sabotaging artist.” Aiming to write a musical about Ray, Davy’s research included interviewing a mutual friend who’d met Ray in 1954. However, the closest Davy came to finishing the musical was to cut this cover of Ray’s torchy classic “Cry,” recorded with myself, Skip Kline, Felipe Torres, and Davy’s old friend Chris Andrews. Blumhouse's The Invisible Man Reboot Gets An Official Synopsis
Blumhouse and Universal have released an official synopsis for The Invisible Man reboot. Universal had originally intended to revive the horror property for its Dark Universe, with Johnny Depp starring as the titular character. However, the shared monster movie franchise was cancelled after Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy reboot disappointed in 2017, and The Invisible Man remake moved to Blumhouse instead.
Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (Insidious: Chapter 3, Upgrade), Blumhouse's The Invisible Man is a low-budget, socially conscious take on the classic Universal monster in the vein of the studio's popular horror films like Get Out, The Purge series, and Halloween. It's led by a cast that includes The Haunting of Hill House actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen as The Invisible Man and The Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss as his ex-girlfriend. Other key roles are played by Aldis Hodge (Brian Banks), Harriet Dyer (The InBetween), and Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time).
Related: Every Upcoming Horror Movie Franchise Reboot
Filming got underway on The Invisible Man in Sydney, Australia last month, ahead of the movie's scheduled release in February 2020 (it was only recently bumped up from March). Universal and Blumhouse have since unveiled the official plot summary for the reboot, which you can read below.
What you can’t see can hurt you. Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (Us, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) stars in a terrifying modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic monster character.
Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer, NBC’s The InBetween), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge, Straight Outta Compton) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid, HBO’s Euphoria).
But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.
This synopsis lines up with The Invisible Man plot details that've leaked over the last several months, ever since the movie started casting earlier this year. It's also been reported that Jackson-Cohen's character turns himself invisible using an advanced suit he initially developed for the Department of Defense, suggesting that The Invisible Man will deal with the dangers of technology in the wrong hands (much like Whannel's last movie, the acclaimed sci-fi thriller Upgrade). Moss has further described the film as a story of empowerment and a woman abuse victim overcoming their abuser, similar to Whannell's scripts for Insidious: Chapter 3 (which he directed) and especially Insidious: The Last Key (which he wrote only).
Although The Invisible Man is being approached as a one-off, it could wind up launching a new set of Universal monster reboots. The studio has failed twice now to revitalize its popular horror IPs (first with 2014's Dracula Untold, then The Mummy), but there's reason to believe third time will be the charm, given Blumhouse's previous successes. Producer Jason Blum has even said he's "open" to reconfiguring the scripts for abandoned Dark Universe reboots like Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolfman, in the event that The Invisible Man becomes a box office hit. Failing that, the project sounds like a timely and otherwise scary take on the idea that someone being able to turn themselves invisible is actually pretty horrifying.
